ReGeneration House was a transformative project for us at Vertical Grain, marking our first venture into a large-scale renovation. It was a journey of discovery, learning, and deepening client relationships. With its rich history and personal significance to the clients, this home challenged us to innovate and honour its legacy.
Layers of complexity
This wasn't just any home; it was a place steeped in personal history and emotional significance for our clients. Our challenge was twofold: to navigate the complexities of a major build while honoring the deep connection our clients had with their home. Throughout the process, we prioritized keeping our clients involved and respected, ensuring their vision and memories were woven into every aspect of the renovation.
Right to the foundation
Working closely with the clients, we uncovered the emotional ties they had with their home. The husband, who had grown up in the house, shared stories that brought the space to life. During demolition, we discovered that his name was spray-painted on the foundation walls during his childhood. The family connection was visceral, tangible. These elements became touchstones for our work, guiding our approach to the renovation.
Communication

Our collaboration with ONE SEED Architecture and the active involvement of the clients were crucial to the project's success. Doug played an instrumental role in bridging the emotional and technical aspects of the renovation. Reframing setbacks
One of the most poignant challenges was dealing with the removal of a 100-year-old cedar tree, a beloved part of the property's legacy. We transformed this challenge into an opportunity by incorporating the tree into the home's design as stair treads, creating a tangible connection to the past while allowing for change.
